In 1899, George T. Mann operated an undertaking and embalming service from the upstairs floor of the old Crystal Building on North Third Street in Bardstown. For many years Mann prepared bodies after death and then took them to their families homes for visitation. But in the Mid- 1930s that trend changed.

In 1938, Mann moved the business to a home on 212 South Third Street that was owned by Jasper Muir of Wilson and Muir Bank. The home was built and first owned by John Rogers in 1828. Rogers was also the architect who designed and supervised construction of St. Joseph Cathedral in Bardstown. The funeral home occupies the same location today.

Mann realized as the county grew he would need more assistance. In the Mid-1940s Mann called on Dr. J.I. Greenwell, a New Haven physician, and asked if his son James B. Greenwell would join him in the business. After finishing his studies and receiving his license, James B. bought into the business in 1948. The Greenwell family has been serving this community since that partnership was formed more than 60 years ago. James B. passed away in 1975. His son, J.I. Greenwell, continued to operate the family business until his own death in May 2002. After the death of her husband, Susan D. Greenwell, wanted to continue the tradition of serving the families of Nelson County and bought out the remaining interest in Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home.
